***Is Linux good for the U.S. economy? If SCO and Big Business has anything to do with it, and they usually get what they want, especially with this administration, Linux will soon be forced underground. In many investors minds, Microsoft is the last bastion for solid tech stocks, and not only for the individual. There are a lot of brokerage houses that use Microsoft stock as a staple.

U.S. Economics 101

For my rebel friends that think Linux is going to be the rebel code that takes down the evil empire, you are wrong. Its not going to happen, it will never happen. Why, because we are a capitalistic society that depends on spending. In this country free software may just a well be free gasoline.

(The purchase of oil is what our dollar is based on; this is why there is a Federal Reserve. Every drop of oil purchased in the world is done so with the U.S. dollar. Our entire economy depends on it and if threatened we go to war. Saudi Arabia is a protected ally because they produce and sell most of the worlds oil. This is why we over look that fact that their citizens are treated the worst in the world, their women are not allowed to vote, and why we overlook the fact that it was their people that killed almost four thousand Americans on 9/11.What does this have to do with Linux? Im getting there.)

Senators and Congressmen are put in to office for one reason alone; to keep America sovereign. The only way to keep America sovereign is to keep American businesses profitable. If businesses are making money then they can keep American citizens employed and its their tax dollars that fund government spending. (Remember, the U.S. government is the largest employer in the world.)

The Big Picture

Microsoft employs a lot of people. A lot of people work for companies that support Microsoft and its products. A lot of people have their money invested in Microsoft stocks. A lot of investment companies have retirement funds invested in Microsoft stock. If Microsoft collapses, millions of people will lose their retirement, investment money and jobs.

Many people, (politicians are peoplewell sort of.) are concerned with how Linux is taking market shares away from Microsoft. This means that with Linux being implemented in more and more server rooms, Microsoft is selling fewer products. Less goods sold means layoffs and this means a drop in stock prices. While some people see Linux as being the operating system savior, other see it as damaging the U.S. economy at a time when we are already suffering.

So, what is being done to slow down the Linux threat?

Network Administrators and Engineers are the number one offenders when it comes to replacing Microsofts network operating system with Linux. 650,000 of these people have lost their jobs in the past two years. It has slowed Linux down some, but not enough. Now there is a threat of Linux taking over the desktop and as we know the desktop operating system is Microsofts main income. (As well as other companies too. Im not just picking out Microsoft. There are other companies being affected as well. Its just easier to explain using one companys name than many names.)

The spread and implementation of Linux is by the computer professional. Microsoft and others, have a monumental responsibility to their stockholders and software partners. It is no surprise to me that the computer professional was the largest group to lose their jobs in the past two years. If the only way to eliminate the spread of the Linux virus is to replaced computer people with overseas outsourcing and dummy terminals, Linux will be pushed underground and Linus Torvalds will be Morpheus.
