What End-Users Mean?

Why does an end-user call their computer a hard-drive or modem?

This is one of the most common mistakes made by an end-user when trying to refer to the computer case. Many times when they need help with their computer, they will almost always refer to their computer case as a Modem, hard drive or CPU. Usually what they try to communicate to us is something like this:

    "Excuse me, but I know that you are very busy helping someone else, but if you can find the time, could you possibly help me?"

    Unfortunately, in most cases what really comes out of their mouths is;

    "My modem is not working and it's your fault." And before you are able to translate what they are trying to say, they further their statement by saying: "This never happened before you came to work here." And of course, what they are really saying is: "Please, please mister computer man; beat me in the head with a 9 pound ping hammer so they can replace my five dollar an hour job with an escaped circus monkey with a flagellation problem."

    And of course, because you don't speak End-User, you completely misunderstood what they wanted and instead of beating this person in the head with a 9 pound ping hammer, you removed his or her hours from the time clock program, switched her social security number with someone that was on the FBI's Most Wanted website. And configured her mouse for a left-hander.
