Common Frustration Among I.T.
Directors
by Anonymous
 When
it comes to a large medical company, where the board of director's are all
Physicians, the IT Department is always over ruled!
I am the Director of I.T. for a large medical company in Texas. I love the
company I work for, but the Chief owner and the board of Directors and I do not
see Eye-to-Eye. We are using an old Unix based billing software which all
the users telnet into. The program is around 15 years old, full of bugs
and was developed by one person. Almost on a daily basis, I have to call
the programmer to pinpoint out the problems we are having and in return, we
continue to pay him $125.00/hr. Last year, we paid him over $50000.00 to
fix the problems. This has gone on for so many years, I can't remember.
I purposed a new program which is windows based and the Database is SQL 2000.
The program works like a dream. After doing a cost analyses, we would
increase profit per billing by over $280000.00/year. The program would
also require less employee's. We would save $240000.00/year by reducing 8
employees. By removing the programmer for the old software, we
would reduce expense's by another $50000.00/year. The program, with all
bells and whistles, license, etc... is $97000.00 (This is including server with
SQL 2000).
After doing a presentation to the board of directors, they voted against the new
billing software. They said it cost too much! But, two doctors
wanted a special program for themselves, which they never use, cost $10000.00.
Hum...my God. I just can't understanding their thought process. Also, they
decided to redecorate a new office at the cost of $150000.00. Lesson learned:
8 years of education does not equal intelligence!
