The Lowest Common Denominator Has Gotten Smaller
I have no idea what's going on out there, but I'm starting to get more than a little worried. Jackass was the big money making movie last weekend. The Anna Nicole Show just got renewed for another wonderful season of watching trailer trash with money getting drunk and puking in the back of a limo. There are no original sci fi series' left on the SciFi Channel, and I'm spending all my time watching the Crocodile Hunter on Animal Planet. (If I could just get Steve-O to teach me that Top Jaw Rope trick, things would be a lot quieter around here) But seriously, where did all our shows go? For a while there it seemed like science fiction tv was going strong with no end in sight. I think we had three Star Trek shows on at the same time. Then the rumblings started. First they said that Star Trek NG had to be cancelled because of high production costs. We didn't get too worried, there were lots of other shows out there, and we knew they were headed off to take over the big screen franchise anyway. A move that was long overdue. I mean, let's face it, the letterbox format is no friend to 285lbs of anything shoved into a Star Trek uniform. But then, one by one, they all started disappearing. Did we stop watching sci fi? In a way, I think we did. I think we got spoiled by high production values and stopped watching BAD sci fi. Since network executives don't know the difference and won't pay for production values, they thought we stopped watching all together. Of course, it doesn't help when they move shows around at will, refuse to spend money on advertising, and have a 4 month hiatus without reruns. Or premiere a show for 3 weeks and then pre-empt it for a season of baseball. With treatment like that, how could a show NOT fail? I fear that once the last of the current batch of science fiction tv shows is run into the ground, all we are going to be left with will be slasher shows and psychics with Sci Fi labels on them. So unless we want to spend the 2005 tv season watching Crossing Over to Surviver Island with Anna Nicole, we need to do something to get quality Science Fiction programming back on top.
The top of the right column is a list of current science fiction shows that I was able to find. Take a look. Give something a try. You might just find your new favorite show. If your current favorite sci fi show isn't listed, please e-mail me and tell me about it so that I can add it to the list. But do it quickly, before they cancel it. I've also got links to some classic sci fi tv as well as movies on DVD.
The top left is sci fi movies that are new releases or coming soon. We've got a lot to look forward to on the big screen. (at least movie producers get it) We'll be covering everything from the coolest trailers to movie reviews so stop by often, and bring a friend.
Remember, the next generation of scientists is watching tv right now. Unless we start supporting quality science fiction programming we are never gonna get those flying cars! However, if my daughter's viewing habits are any indication of what the future is going to look like, I'm pretty sure we are going to continue to enjoy a world that is free of young, sexy vampires.

Commentary about the SCI-FI
Channel (revised)

Like many computer nerds, I too enjoy watching science
fiction, especially space relayed Sci-Fi. When the Sci-Fi channel
first came out I was as excited as any geek would be. With hit
movies such as Star Wars, Star Trek as well as other sci-fi movies,
someone finally realized that there is a market for sci-fi.
